Family Science Night

Plan now to help with this event!  
Our team hosts the event for Hilsman Middle School.  It is usually the most well-attended curriculum night at Hilsman.  We have 20+ area businesses and organization present sharing science and conservation information with Hilsman families.  All activities take place indoors and everything will be free.  All SET members and as many parents that can are needed to help staff booths, wear the Binny costume, welcome families, etc.  Student Science Fair projects will also be on display.  A volunteer sign-up form will be sent via email by December 14.

NEED Energy Conference & Youth Awards 2017:
The following students and their families have expressed an interest in being a delegate to the NEED Energy Conference & Youth Awards in Washington, D.C. this summer:

Middle school team members will participate in the pre-conference activities.  We will be in Washington, D.C. from June 22-26.  High school team members will not participate in the pre-conference activities.  High school team members will be in DC from June 23-26.  

If you are interested in being a delegate, please let me know by Thursday, December 8 and then go on-line and register.  The $75 deposit will be due a few weeks after you register.  The middle school SET group is limited to 14 delegates.  The high school SET group is limited to 5 delegates.
The fee for middle school team members for the 4 nights and 5 days is between $700 and $820.  The price is determined by the number of roommates you choose to have.  Three people per room is less than 2 people per room.

Ripple Effect Film Festival
Athens’ premiere water-focused film event has gone statewide! The Ripple Effect Film Project invites filmmakers from around the State of Georgia to submit short films to be showcased at the Blue Carpet Premiere at the historic Morton Theater in Athens, Georgia on March 25, 2017.  The films must be between 1-4 minutes in length.  The films are due at the ACC Water Conservation Office by 5:00 pm on January 31, 2017.
$2,000 in cash prizes and the opportunity to have films shown in select local theaters make the Ripple Effect a premiere event for filmmakers in Georgia.
This year the Ripple Effect Film Project asks filmmakers to consider the impact of human behavior on the world’s oceans. What actions do we take (or not take) each day that may affect ocean health, regardless of where we live? We make daily choices about our energy and water use, transportation, food, consumer products, and keeping our waterways clean. Your film should focus on the key issue and should establish a connection between the key issue and the health of the ocean. Ideally your film will highlight eco-positive actions that ‘do the right thing’ for the ocean.

America Recycles Day in Coordination with National Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week + International Children's Day
America Recycles Day = Tuesday, November 15
Read for Recycling Day = Wednesday, November 16
National Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week = November 14-18
Throughout the week, Hilsman students, staff, and community members will be encouraged to recycle.  Our team will reward students and staff that are "caught" recycling with a prize.  
We will have a Trash Hunger station on every grade level hallway.  Our team is challenging every person at Hilsman to recycle 10 health & beauty product containers.

International Children's Day = recognized at Hilsman on Friday, November 18.

Hilsman students, staff, and community members will be encouraged to recycle items for the Trash Hunger Campaign and bring in a canned food item for the Food Bank.

Please Help Make our Final Fundraiser of the Year a Success!
We will be sharing the restaurant space with the Lions Club.  Team members will need to be ready to prep the restaurant at 7:00 am.  The Silent Auction will take place in the foyer area and conclude at 9:30 am.  

Every team member needs to try to sell 5 breakfast tickets.  If you don't need fundraiser dollars or can't help at the restaurant on the morning of April 23rd, please help by selling tickets.  Your teammates that need to earn field trip money need your help!  If you are not going on the Atlanta or Washington, D.C. trip - help your teammates by volunteering to work as a server, a host, or a Silent Auction helper.

The Trout Release Field Trip is next Wednesday, April 6.
A detailed packet of information and additional required paperwork will be given to all participants on Tuesday, March 29.  The Blue Ridge Outdoor Education Center paperwork is needed back asap.

SET Weekly News: March 4-27, 2016

March 19-27 will be Energy Education Week in Athens-Clarke County


March 14 = team member delegates (Illandria, Sophia, Lily, & Maya) will meet with the Mayor for an Energy Education Week Proclamation


March 19, 8:30-11:30 am = team members will lead Energy Conservation games at CCSD's Young Scientists' Day (Alps Road Elementary)




March 19, 6:00 pm = the films of Lily, Isabella, & Nyah will premiere at the Ripple Effect Film Festival (Cine' Theater)  Ripple Effect Film Festival Information Link

March 21 = team members will distribute Energy Star pamphlets and information at Best Buy and Lowe's

March 21-25 = team members will teach energy and water conservation lessons to other students at Hilsman and local elementary schools

March 23-25 = team members will collect Energy Star Pledges during Parent Conferences

This year's theme is "Get Active! Get Green!"
The contest judges want your work to encourage everyone to get outside and enjoy the environment that we work so hard to maintain.  
Design a picture, take a photograph, or write a poem to demonstrate your efforts 
of getting moving outdoors and how you can help save the planet!  
Please turn your entry forms into Mrs. Hughes on or before Wednesday, March 23.  
Winners will be notified in early April.  Winners and their families will be invited to the GreenFest Awards Ceremony on Friday, April 15.  All winners will be awarded prizes.  Winning projects will also be on display at the GreenFest Awards Ceremony.  
Hilsman's SET has had multiple winners in the middle school category for the past 4 years.  Let's keep that tradition going!  




Fundraiser Extension & Reminders
Several team members and their families have asked for an extension until March 14th on the traditional catalog sales for Nature's Vision and Flower Power...the extension on those 2 fundraisers has been approved.  Spring Break is a great time to sell flowers and Earth-friendly items.

The Internet Version of both sales will continue through mid-April.  Those 2 sales can go longer because no money has to go through HMS and CCSD.  

If you are not selling fundraiser items, please support other team families and purchase something as sign of support.
