SET News: August & September 2017

Welcome to the Team!

Team Mission:

The mission of the Science & Energy Team
is to promote conservation in the school and community.

Year-Long Community Service Projects:

The Trash Hunger Campaign - We recycle health and beauty product containers, ink cartridges, and hand-held electronics.  The money we earn from recycling these items is donated to the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia and UNICEF.  This campaign has been in place for 12 years and has earned over $3,500 to help the hungry in Athens and around the world.  In addition to donating money, we also work at the Food Bank in Athens on weekends and weekdays during the summer months.

Energy Star Pledge Drive - Each year we encourage others to save energy. We teach lessons, host information booths, and lead activities in the community.  We also collect Energy Star Pledges through a partnership with Energy Star.  Here is a link to our electronic Energy Star Pledge Drive Campaign:  Link to the Energy Star Pledge Drive

Volunteers Needed ASAP!

The Science & Energy Team has 2 opportunities to serve the community in the next two weeks.  Your help is needed at both events.
  • Community Service Opportunity #1 = Keep Athens-Clarke County Beautiful's Dirty Dance Party @ Little Kings Shuffle Club from 5:00-8:00 pm on Saturday, August 26 --- team member volunteers are needed to work at craft station where children (mostly age 10 and under)
will make something from recycled materials.  ACC Recycling and KACCB will provide all of the supplies.  We just need to supply the volunteers!  Last year, we were inside.  If you can help at the Dirty Dance Party on Saturday, August 26 - complete the form here:

  • Community Service Opportunity #2 = Athens Water Festival @ Sandy Creek Park from 11:45 am-2:30 pm onSaturday, September 9 --- team members and family member volunteers are need to work at various stations where children and their families will learn about conservation of water and natural resources.  If you sign up by August 25th on the form below, the ACC Water Conservation Office will provide each volunteer with a free t-shirt and a boxed lunch.   The t-shirts and lunches have to be ordered ahead of time.  I would like to have 25+ volunteers from the Science & Energy Team helping at the Water Festival.  I am also offering a bonus 100 to anyone that is my student that volunteers!  If you can help at the Athens Water Festival on Saturday, September 9, complete the form here:

Team Notes

The Hilsman Science & Energy Team has had 5 years of success at both the state and national level in our annual competition.  The middle school team has won 1st place in the state and placed in the top 4 nationally since 2012.  Here are 2 slide shows highlighting our activities for the past 2 years:
The high school SET celebrated its first year of existence last year.  The high school team won 1st place state honors and won 1st place new team at the national level in the high school level competition.  Our program has a history of excellence and commitment to making a positive difference for people and the planet.

The Science & Energy Teams (middle and high school) are both partners of the National Energy Education Project.  More information about our national organization can be found at:  http://www.need.org/

If you are thinking about joining the team at any time this year, go ahead and turn in an application. You can attend meetings when your schedule clears.  Several students have asked if they can join if they are on other teams...YES, you can!

SET will begin meeting on Thursday, September 7.  We will meet in the cafeteria first, get snacks, and then move to room 214 for our activities.

Ripple Effect Film Festival
Athens’ premiere water-focused film event has gone statewide! The Ripple Effect Film Project invites filmmakers from around the State of Georgia to submit short films to be showcased at the Blue Carpet Premiere at the historic Morton Theater in Athens, Georgia on March 25, 2017.  The films must be between 1-4 minutes in length.  The films are due at the ACC Water Conservation Office by 5:00 pm on January 31, 2017.
$2,000 in cash prizes and the opportunity to have films shown in select local theaters make the Ripple Effect a premiere event for filmmakers in Georgia.
This year the Ripple Effect Film Project asks filmmakers to consider the impact of human behavior on the world’s oceans. What actions do we take (or not take) each day that may affect ocean health, regardless of where we live? We make daily choices about our energy and water use, transportation, food, consumer products, and keeping our waterways clean. Your film should focus on the key issue and should establish a connection between the key issue and the health of the ocean. Ideally your film will highlight eco-positive actions that ‘do the right thing’ for the ocean.
